It can look like New York, which is great, since it's cheaper to shoot here.  It can also look like Philadelphia, which is fabulous!  

Philly and its surrounding areas have colonial to modernist architecture and urban, suburban and rural locations.  We have places that look like Maine or Colorado, and even Central Park.  Many neighborhoods haven't changed, which allows for easy period-piece shoots.

SUPPORT

The Greater Philadelphia Film Office provides experts and support in the way of financing and technical direction.  Through their invaluable support, productions can take advantage of a multitude of perks tailored to indie productions.  Fee-Free Locations can be arranged in Philadelphia and throughout Pennsylvania.  Philadelphia also offers productions use of the Navy Yard Soundstage, the only municipally-owned sound stage in the country. Also, visitors staying 30 days or more in a hotel are not obliged to pay the PA hotel tax.  The City of Philadelphia may provide up to two free police officers for traffic control and security as needed for filming activity.

Better still, Pennsylvania offers a 25% tax credit to films that spend at least 60% of their total budget in the Commonwealth.  It offers transferable tax credits to film producers.  This means that if the tax credit awarded is more than the actual state taxes the recipient owes, they can sell the remaining credit to another business.
